Explanation

The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Tortosa sits on the space in which stood the Roman Forum, and later, as a place of worship, the Visigothic seo, and later the mosque. Between 1158 and 1178 he built the Romanesque seo missing, it was located within the grounds of the present temple. The works of the Gothic cathedral was started in 1347, and continue through mid-eighteenth century and the community agencies Canonical, founded in the twelfth century. Despite the long period of construction, it is remarkable stylistic unity presented by Seo.

The head, one of the most unique elements of the building, is characterized by the absence of walls between the chapels, which thus constitute a double ambulatory around the altar. The plan of the cathedral has three naves without cruise, with side chapels between the buttresses and covered with vaults. From all the chapels of the basilica, stands above all dedicated to the Mother of God of the Cinta, patron of the city.

Built between 1672 and 1725, it is an example of Baroque mature symbiosis of architecture, sculpture and painting, that uses resources typical of this style theatrics. The original project, which was Baroque schemes, still unfinished and was simplified with a more classical, reducing decorative elements.
