Institutional support to the candidacy of Terres de l'Ebre as Biosphere Reserve
Terres de l'Ebre. Costa Dorada. 13th March 2012. The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Food and Natural Environment, Josep Maria Pelegri, accompanied by the Delegate of the Government in the Terres de l'Ebre, Xavier Pallares and the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Jose Luis Mora, have maintained a meeting with Federico Mayor Zaragoza, politician and diplomat who was Director General of UNESCO from 1987 to 1999, honorary member of the Club of Rome and is currently Co-President of the High Level Group for Alliance of Civilizations, with the aim exchange views and seek synergies to strengthen the candidacy of the Lands of the Ebro as a Biosphere Reserve. This meeting is part of an institutional action to publicize the values inherent in the Lands of the Ebro in that geographical area with a strong natural heritage values, cultural landscape with enough potential to develop successful models sustainable economic development based on tourism and agriculture. Since cooperation and management held by public and private stakeholders, these models can contribute to development and provide new growth opportunities to socioeconomic, in full harmony with equity and social cohesion, territorial and environmental. By The Man and the Biosphere program (MAB) of UNESCO and the voluntary instrument of global application, as is the figure of the Biosphere Reserve, the Terres de l'Ebre observatory may become permanent projector and speaker international recognition, creating synergies between conservation and active management of assets and policies environmentally sustainable, economically and socially. According to Minister Pelegri, "the candidate must contribute to sustainability, economic diversification in the region that acts as a genuine vehicle of social and territorial cohesion, while the products and services derived from UNESCO recognition as a Book Biosphere differ qualitatively from their competitors in the global marketplace. "
