The Squid Festival, a tradition that breaks records

Squid Festival 2024 in Salou

Salou. Costa Dorada. 03 December 2024. One of the most genuine traditions of Salou, which connects the municipality with its seafaring past, is undoubtedly the Squid Festival, which has been organised every year for 49 editions by the Salou Yacht Club. In addition, the 2024 Squid Festival has broken all records with the capture of 731 squid and a total weight of 153,586 kg of cephalopods, caught by 32 boats and 113 fishermen. In 2023, 246 squid were caught, weighing 50 kilos.

The first prize of the competition went to the boat "Figa Fosca", captained by Carlos Rubio, with crew members Joshua Menea and Jordi Rubio, who caught 75 squid with a total weight of 14,012 kg.

The second prize went to the boat "Salou", captained by Sisco Orts, together with crew members Salvador Plaza and Ana Prats, with 49 squid and a total weight of 13.261 kg.

The third prize went to the boat "Sobre las aguas", captained by Francisco Navarro, accompanied by Juan Muñoz and Josep de la Iglesia, with a catch of 40 squid and a weight of 9.771 kg.

During the awards ceremony, which was attended by some 250 people, a special tribute was paid to José Francisco Corniel (José) and José Miguel Cortillas (Pepe), key figures in the success of the competition. Words of thanks were also dedicated to the veteran fishermen Rogelio and Borràs, for their constant involvement in the maritime and fishing traditions of Salou.

At the awards ceremony, the Mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, said that the Squid Festival “is more than a competition, it is a tradition that is passed down from generation to generation”, and for this reason he stated that “guaranteeing its continuity is the best way to preserve our identity and pride as people of Salou”.

With the success of this edition, the Squid Festival is already thinking about a very special celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2025.
