Modernism in Reus: Pere Mata Institute

The Pere Mata Institute is a psychiatric hospital built between 1897 and 1912 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. It is the flagship of Modernism Reus visit. It is also one of the jewels of the Catalan Modernism and is the precedent of the Hospital de Sant Pau, Barcelona, designed by the same architect also.
Lluís Domènech designed around the Pere Mata Institute full exterior and interior, from the façade to the furnishings of each pavilion. The complex comprising several pavilions to distribute patients by sex, disease, and social class and a large landscaped central promenade separating the buildings. General services pavilion, which has a large tower 30 meters high was also constructed.
Finally, 6 modernist pavilions, most notably Pavilion of Distinguished, completed in 1908, and is the only one that you can visit is made. This building was used for patients with higher economic level and so is the ornamental offering greater wealth, which remains intact. Currently used for tourist and cultural uses.
It has been declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Generalitat of Catalonia.
How to get
Pavilion of Distinguished is in the Pere Mata Institute Road, 5 minutes by car and 45 minutes walk from the center of Reus. You can also take a taxi or bus (lines L30 and L31, stopping at the Plaza of the Child Geese, better known as the Geese Square).
When to visit: days and times
The tour is free and lasts 45 minutes.
Schedules to visit the Pavilion of Distinguished are:
- From 2 January to 14 June and from 16 September to 30 December, you can visit the Saturday afternoon of the 16 h to 18 h
- From June 15 to September 15 can be visited from Monday to Saturday from 11 to 13 h and from 16.30 h to 18.30 h
Prices for visiting Pavilion of Distinguished are:
- From 14 to 64, 5 Eu
- From 7 to 13 years and for over 65 years, 4 Euros
- All children under 7 years free
