Salou. Costa Dorada. 25 January 2022. After years of flooding every time it rains, work has finally begun to widen and channel the Barenys ravine, which has historically overflowed and caused damage to Salou, both public and private property. With a project worth 17 million euros, the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) is undertaking the works in 2 phases, which will be completed in 2023.

The first phase of the works has begun with the demolition of 21 homes, as Barenys Street must be widened 25 meters on the right bank to then build 4 concrete crates 5 meters wide by 2 high. This action is done in a section of the 205 meters that go from the train track to the mouth of the ravine in the sea.

To get an idea of the scale of the work, in addition to the data presented so far, it must be borne in mind that after the demolition it is necessary to divert the existing services, which are affected by 31 points. The completion of this phase will consist of the urbanization of the surface created by the concrete drawers. The expected duration is 18 months.

The mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, could not be more satisfied with the start of these works long claimed for years by the City Council and the residents of Salou. "Today is a historic day," he said, "because a historic claim to the municipality of Salou and the Barrio de la Salut is coming true." Referring to the final achievement of the project, Granados explained that “it has not been easy to get here; the road has been long, but in the end we have been able to carry out a project that will solve one of the most important sanitation infrastructure problems that our municipality has suffered ”.

For his part, the Councilor for Land Management and Housing of Salou, Marc Montagut, has explained that “it is necessary to widen the pipeline, which will increase the drainage capacity of 140 m3 / s from the Cavet road to the mouth of the sea ".

At the official start of the works, the mayor and members of the government team were accompanied by the director of the ACA, Samuel Reyes, together with the director of the Territorial Services of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda in Tarragona of the Generalitat de Catalonia, Àngel Xifré, and the head of the division of the contractor company.

The second phase of the works corresponds to the section of the ravine between the railway line and the Cavet road. The length is more than 1,000 meters and a 30-meter-wide by 3-meter-wide trapezoidal canal will be executed, covered with a jetty. The works of this phase will begin once the expropriations of the affected lands have been completed.
